French girls washing top boots before they are repaired

Seven young women are lined up behind a long row of boots so that only their faces are showing. The boots have all been placed side by side on a rack which runs across the top of deep, metal sinks- most of which are full of dirty water. Under the sinks buckets and brushes are stored on a raised shelf. The shed itself is quite confined and there is only one window. There are more work stations visible in the background which adds to the heavy atmosphere. It is thought that John Warwick Brooke took this photograph.
As in Great Britain the local population, which would have consisted mainly of women, children and the elderly, were mobilised to help the war effort.

A female ambulance driver appears from under her vehicle. She has probably been making repairs to it, her hands are oily and she looks as though she is wearing some sort of protective overalls. She wears a dirty headscarf. VAD is short for Voluntary Aid Detachment. VADs took on a variety of roles in the war effort, from nurses to catering staff.
